Housewives all over the country are turning the channel from All My Children to the better soap opera that is airing on ESPN. It stars an indecisive, extremely talented quarterback who has disrupted the smooth flow of the off-season by "taking back" his retirement.
It's understandable that the organization and fellow players might be annoyed at his change of heart (which occurs almost every season). Favre may have gone too far this time, but I still believe that the Packers owe it to him to give him his position back. I am not even a Green Bay fan, but I can appreciate what the man has done for Wisconsin. We are talking about one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history. He holds NFL records for most career passing yards, career completions, career touchdown passes, and career wins as a staring qb. When a man with this much talent who has been the face of the Packers organization for years now asks to come back, how could they tell him to get in the backseat?? Aaron Rodgers can wait another year.
Brett's safest route would be a trade. If he was to play for another team and successfully lead them deep into the playoffs, he would get the last laugh, Ted Thompson would kick himself in the ass, and Brett would leave a legacy in another city with thousands of new fans. If he had a mediocre season, like MJ did in his stint with the Wizards, it would quickly be forgotten and his legacy as a Packer would remain intact.
However...does any other team want him? Sure the Jets and Bucs were both granted permission to speak with him, but the fact that they were granted permission does not necessarily mean that they requested the permission. coaches, Mangini and Gruden, say that they are satisfied with their current qbs. Furthermore, does either team have what it will take to pay Favre?
My opinion...Brett should swallow his pride and go back to the Packers behind Aaron. If he does not live up to expectations, it wont be that big of a deal since he's not the starter and not much is expected of him. If he does prove his worth, it would not be difficult to give him his rightful position as a starter after several games.
Tune in for a new episode tomorrow after General Hospital.
