OMG, OMG, OMG!, We are just hours away from the start of the 2008-09 NBA season. There are parts of my body that are roused that are aberrant for a man, to behave in such a manner and I don’t even care that I have just told you that. I was going to put up my Sixth Man of the Year award, but I just can’t take all this excitement.
For the NBA this is like Midnight Madness and the first game of the season rolled into one. Or imagine R.Kelly walking into a room seeing a group of under aged women (sorry about the image). Or like when you pick up your latest issue of Slam magazine and go to the Dunk of the Month or whichever shoe company has the pullout for the month, it is sports porn for fans.
I really don’t remember the start of the season ever having this much excitement at the beginning of the season or this type of line up of nationally televised games on opening nights. First we start off with, the Cavaliers versus the Celtics. The NBA puts it's most storied champion on versus its' biggest star.
The Celtics get their rings and we the fans get to Lebron versus Paul Pierce. Folks expect these two put up 30 points a piece. They don't play defense on each other well but they will score on each other, quite well. I would talk about other players but there is nothing flashy about them. They are going to do what they and you don't care. So why waste time? The winner of this game is about which one of these players can control the game.
Now I have not picked the Cavs or the Celtics to go to the finals but more about that laster in the week. I do think that these two teams are going to be the 2 of the top 4 teams in the East at the end.
Finally in the late game, which is what I was really trying to get to anyway, game 2 we have two of the top three teams in the 10 years in the Western Conference, the Lakers versus the Trail Blazers. Before I even get to Kobe, in this game we have 3 of the top 7 future big men. That’s right people 3/7 of the future top big men. In the next 3-4 years Oden, Aldridge, Bynum, Howard, Jefferson and Hawes will dominant the NBA. I know that last one throws you off, but I’ll have to discuss it at a later date.Andrew Bynum and Greg Oden both showed up to camps looking like beast. They look like the way I expect centers to look, like a dude to be afraid of, so, throw it down big man, throw it down! Folks we get to watch basically the rebirth of Wilt vs. Russell in Bynum vs. Oden. You have the offensive center who can pass, shoot and if he put the effort into it could dominate the boards vs. defensive center who dominates the boards, blocks shots and is a piece among 5 players. Does Portland not look like the Celtics of the 60’s and 70’s with all that talent on that team?
At the power forward spot Aldridge vs. Gasol. If there were ever two seven footers that enjoy hanging out in the high post here they are. The good news though is more and more Robin Lopez might look like Tim Duncan but Lamarcus Aldridge’s game is starting to look like Duncan’s. Trading Aldridge maybe the number one reason to fire John Paxson (where is Jim Paxson?), you know he has to be happy that he is not in New York, where on day one the fans have signs made to have you fired.
Nate McMillan is probably going to put Brandon Roy on Mr. Reigning MVP, Kobe Bryant, but I really want to see Rudy Fernandez against Kobe. Can you imagine the crap they are going to in Spanish, because Rudy is not a shy 23 year old? Rudy plays like a younger version of Ginobli but dare I say better, it’s scary. Fernandez can already hit the NBA three well, will he try and dunk on Kobe. Better yet is Kobe going to send a message tonight? Get the chips and beer, because this is better than watching the Obama haters! This is sports porn!
