So all I have had to hear over the last few weeks is about the Jordan's Hall of Fame speech. No one seems to be happy with the speech except Jay Marriotti. So I find myself doing something I don't even remember doing when Marriotti was one of the only three sport's writers I knew (the other's being Woody Paige and Peter Vescey), agreeing with him.

To many Jordan gave a petty and bitter speech (obviously they did not hear the Peter Vescey speech that weekend). M.J.'s speech seemed out of place for those who choose to live behind and sell the falsities of the game and life to the public. At the same time it allowed many Americans to say to themselves after 25 years a man who had been in their house more than some relatives, "I don't like Michael Jordan". But the greatest basketball player did nothing of out character. He for once, in front of the camera was completely his self and to be honest, I liked it and found it humorous.

Stephen A. Smith wrote an article that I read online for this month’s ESPN the magazine about Carmelo Anthony that I found of interest. Yes, like most I find Stephen A to be an immoderate ranter of a commentator when on television, especially when you consider the majority commentators are there nearly by job description ,not to commentate, but rant.

Yet like a moth I continue glide into the light, even though I know I forsake myself and listen to him. This is much more because my introduction to Stephen A, was through his writings for the Philadelphia Enquirer and to be honest he is a pretty good journalist, most particular when it comes to basketball. Not because he is the new Jim Gray for Kobe or A.I. but because he usually checks his sources with several people around the league and then still offers, his own spin on the matter. So in these cases I give pardon and way to him.

So I watched the first slate of games the NBA served up on opening week and they were not too shabby. For the Celtics-Cavs it was as expected and predicted, whoever had the most points between Pierce and James won the game. The Cleveland Plain-Dealer picture says it all. We don’t even have to talk about foul shooting or lack of.

Mo Williams looked decent and did what he has basically done since Alabama, run the team and get his shot off. I think a team has finally figured out how to use Delonte West.  He is combo guard, with a decent shot, and gritty defense. He can bring up the ball if you need him but that not his primary thing. This is how he was used at St. Joseph in Philadelphia with the majority of the ball work going to Jameer Nelson. Truthfully I don’t think he is a starter he is best suited as the 6th man but on this team he is best person for the job. He allows for the team to still run while Williams and James can look for their shots.

OMG, OMG, OMG!, We are just hours away from the start of the 2008-09 NBA season. There are parts of my body that are roused that are aberrant for a man, to behave in such a manner and I don’t even care that I have just told you that. I was going to put up my Sixth Man of the Year award, but I just can’t take all this excitement.

For the NBA this is like Midnight Madness and the first game of the season rolled into one. Or imagine R.Kelly walking into a room seeing a group of under aged women (sorry about the image). Or like when you pick up your latest issue of Slam magazine and go to the Dunk of the Month or whichever shoe company has the pullout for the month, it is sports porn for fans.

I really don’t remember the start of the season ever having this much excitement at the beginning of the season or this type of line up of nationally televised games on opening nights. First we start off with, the Cavaliers versus the Celtics. The NBA puts it's most storied champion on versus its' biggest star.

It’s time for the next movement. I like to call these players those that are right on the cusp of being known but not quite. Their play catches non-hoop heads and non-ballers by surprise. Today I decided I’m giving you the players that are going to have the most effect on their teams the key being that they are not already stars.

I mean let’s be honest I can’t give you Kobe Bryant and Chris Paul they’re already stars. So instead I have to dig for the Most Improved Player of the Year and challenging things like that. The good news for me though is the Rookie of the Year is always easy because we already know before the season starts, who the GM’s are going to pick. So if I pick who the GM’s pick I look like a genius.

But hey if I just wrote about what GM’s wanted or thought, where would the entertainment be in that? Heck these are the same people who thought Adam Morrison could get his own shot (his whole offensive game is based on getting a floater in the lane) and did not see what I thought I saw in Gilbert Arenas (the Truth), so let’s get started on the next movement.

Can you smell that in the air? This is the best time of the year. It’s a smell of apples, wood and leather in the cold air of a New York fall. I love this time of year and I personally am trying to get cologne of those smells, but Karl Lagerfield is not retuning my calls. It is ok, it’s basketball season so I’m busy.

With just under a week until the start of the NBA season, it is time for some predictions. Just like every basketball pundit loser out there I believe I know the future.

MVP

“All hail the King!” because you will be a witness that LeBron James has become the best player in the NBA, wait, wait, I mean in the world. I hope Kobe enjoyed the summer, because more than the Olympic torch got past in China. I am predicting Bron-Bron putting up 29.5 ppg  6.0 apg 6.5 rpg. It’s now the time for the reign of the King. So for MVP I’m predicting Chris Paul. Not because he will outplay LeBron, though he will be good, but because it’s the NBA and you never get the MVP the year deserve it always the year after. Hey but Bron-Bron I got you for 2010-11.

Despite all the summer intrigue of Brooklyn’s Finest being shipped and showing off his new committed body in the zip codes of South Beach, it’s not going to happen! The Knicks can’t part with Stephon Marbury because they don’t have a better point guard to turn to.  Yeah it’s true they have wealth in point guards in Chris Duhon, Nate Robinson, Mardy Collins and the Summer League sensation Eric Roberson, and they all have qualities that are nice but “they ain’t Starbury” and in places where basketball is still played, that group is called a plethora of mediocrity, or fool’s gold.

Marbury is still the Knicks best point guard and from the looks on the horizon he is here at least until mid-season. Name another Knicks point guard that teams game plan around and know that they still can’t stop. Here is a guy who is good for 20 points and 8 dimes every time he steps on the court The only way I can see the wizard of Madison of letting Starbury go before then is for some superb draft choices and cash due to injury of some “so called” Western Conference contender who has to sellout to get a championship, (like the Houston Rockets, realize that “Skip to my Lou” is not a championship point guard) and wants him and his salary.
